Let’s Talk About the Elephant in the Room

Are you allergic to every natural deodorant?? Ugh!!

You know those tiny bumps that are enough to scare some away from going natural? What are they and are you allergic to your deodorant? The answer is probably not – but every single body is different and you never know.  A rash is your body’s way of saying it doesn’t like something. Maybe you used an old razor while shaving, maybe you had an irritation to the essential oils, or the amount & pH of the baking soda. I can’t really say. I could make this easy and suggest that everyone makes the switch to going natural by trying our Sensitive Unscented formula (because as someone with sensitive skin, I can vouch for it...) But like I said before, every BODY is different, some are much more sensitive than others. So I’ve scoured the internet, read up on what our competitors had to say when it comes to the subject that most want to avoid (because really now, who likes talking about armpits?) Some websites taught me new things and gave me tips worth sharing, but others pushed it under the rug and made big statements that made me cringe.

Nevertheless, let’s talk underarms!

What’s the deal with our underarms? The bottom line is that underarms are one of the most sensitive areas on our body and when you think about it, it makes sense.  They are packed with a high concentration of nerves and lymph nodes. What the armpits do is absorb all substances directly to our capillaries… scary, right? That being said, we have to take into consideration that most of us shave daily so let’s take better care of our underarms!

We can start this by proper care: keeping the skin hydrated and exfoliated. Keep in mind that the skin is extra sensitive, so stick to gentle products like a face wash or scrub. Love your underarms, give them a little TLC and massage them while you’re at it. No, I’m not being sarcastic here – a gentle massage is going to stimulate the lymphatic tissue. And who are we kidding, all massages feel great.

I’m getting off track now! What exactly did I mean when I mentioned detoxing? Here’s the deal – when you switch from using an antiperspirant full of chemicals that you can barely pronounce to a natural deodorant, your body is going to respond and it might not be pretty. The reason behind this is that we spend years and years of using an aluminum based antiperspirant that our skin has become clogged with toxins and bacteria. And now going natural? Our bodies go into overdrive and need to adapt, get rid of all the bad stuff! I know what you’re thinking: "Oh my god. What do I have to go through?!" Trust me, I thought the same. But luckily, I was given a Detox Card that helped me through it. So what should you expect and how should you deal with detoxing? I am here to give you a heads up and a few suggestions!

In the first 2-4 weeks, your body might go through a detox. While getting rid of all of those bad things I mentioned before, you might experience more underarm wetness than usual, an unpleasant odor, or there might be swollen, tender lumps, maybe even a rash/pimples. Don’t worry, it goes away in a few days! Now, I’m not a doctor by any means and this advice isn’t intended to diagnose, treat, or cure any medical conditions you may have. If your symptoms do persist, please discontinue use.

Here are a few helpful hints:

  • Patch test a small area on your forearm to check for sensitivity. You could have a sensitivity to baking soda or your body might be adapting to the natural formula.
  • Try our sensitive unscented first!!! I know you like the scents, but be kind to your underarms during the transition.
  • If you have the beginnings of a rash, use apple cider vinegar. Drink a shot of it and then rub some into your underarms.
  • With painful and lumpy lymph nodes warm compress, dry brush and massage the area to aid in the filtering process.
  • Rub a little alcohol into the area to disinfect any rash or discomfort.
  • Use an underarm detox mask. These can easily be found online… Charcoal or mud are the best.
  • Warm apple cider vinegar compresses work wonders!
  • Drink more water to flush out the toxins faster.
  • Get sweaty! We are supposed to sweat… sweating is great for us!
  • Be careful when shaving. Our pits are delicate. Don’t use a dull or discolored razor! Change to a new clean blade as often as possible.
  • Apply deodorant when your underarms are dry for better effectiveness
