What’s the problem: So, you’ve made the switch to natural deodorant, but you’ve noticed something: your underarms are darkening a bit.
What are the causes: This is not an uncommon phenomenon when getting the body used to deodorants that contain baking soda as a natural ingredient. Don’t worry! The Freedom Family is here to help you with some darkening armpit remedies. (FYI, our NEW Coco Van deodorant is Baking Soda Free!)
Why are my underarms turning dark?
Ideally speaking the armpits should match the shade of the rest of the skin. However that may not be the case due to medical reasons or topical use of the wrong products. Therefore many women shy away from sporting their favorite sleeveless outfit or bikini during the warmer months.
To treat dark underarms, it’s essential to understand what’s causing them. Not one but several factors may be responsible for darkening of the underarms. For instance, application of deodorants and antiperspirants with chemicals can irritate the skin and even lead to pigmentation. Some other dark underarms causes are shaving or wearing tight clothes. Medical conditions such as hyper pigmentation, melasma, bacterial infection, and Addision’s disease can also lead to darkening of the armpits. Acanthosis Nigricans (AN), a skin condition in which the skin thickens and darkens in folds around the body, can cause dark underarms too.
How do you treat dark underarms?
Depending on the cause for darkening of the underarms, it may be possible to treat it with simple remedies. However, in order to prevent your armpits from darkening further, avoid shaving your underarms - instead choose another hair removal procedure such as waxing or laser treatment, also never forget to exfoliate under there with a good body scrub or skin polish. Also if you’ve been using personal hygiene products with chemicals, it’d be best to discontinue their use and switch to an organic deodorant made from completely natural ingredients. Another preventative measure includes minimizing dressing in tight-fitted clothes.
To treat dark underarms, use a natural body scrub or exfoliating product that can effectively remove dead skin cells. Also try to stop smoking, if you want flawless armpits. If none of these dark underarms treatments or preventative measures prove to be effective, it’d be best to consult a doctor to check for any underlying medical issues that may be causing darkening of the armpits.
DIY Ways to Prevent Dark Armpits and Lighten At-Home
Use a DIY Honey-Lemon Scrub
- 1 tbsp of sugar
- 1 tbsp of sea salt
- 1 tbsp of honey
- 1 tbsp of olive oil
- 1 tsp of lemon juice
Mix into a thick paste. Massage a dime-sized amount onto underarm. Rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry.
Don’t Throw Out Those Squeezed Lemon Halves
The natural acidity of citrus helps to offset the alkaline of the baking soda
- Remove the rind (peel) of a lemon, lime, or orange
- Lightly rub the peel in broad circular motions on each armpit for 30 seconds each
- Gently rinse citrus off with lukewarm water and mild soap to prevent irritation from overexposure to citric acid
Less Really Is More
The old adage less is more is new with our natural formula: a couple of swipes is all you need. The lighter the application, the less you might experience underarm darkening.
